Description:
The 2011 armed conflict in Libya exacerbated the threat of explosive remnants of war (ERW) and ammunition storage areas (ASAs) partially destroyed and unsecured. There is a considerable build-up of ammunition stocks in and around AI Zintan, a town close to the Tunisian border that played a strategies role in overthrowing the pro-Gaddafi Forces. Informed by Libyan priorities articulated during the Paris Conference in February 2013 and in response to a support request made by the Military Council of Zintan, the project will assist recognised local brigades (Katibas) in the construction of an ammunition field storage site, the safe relocation of ammunition currently under the control by the Katibas in line with international best practice and the training of key personnel to ensure sustainability of the facility beyond the project's duration. It is hoped that the project will have a catalytic effect in AI Zintan and surroundings on additional constructions fully implemented and financed locally.
