Description:
The violent uprisings that engulfed Libya during the revolts against Colonel Gaddafi's rule, supported by NATO airstrikes, damaged and breached security at the ammunition supply areas (ASAs), where Gaddafi had amassed extensive stockpiles of weapons and ammunition, dating back throughout his rule. The ASAs became a source of weapons and ammunition to the revolutionaries and individual Citizens during and after the Revolution. These ASAs now pose a threat to national and regional stability and security as the contents remain unsecured. The Government of Libya (GoL) currently lacks the capacity required to conduct battle area clearance (BAC) of unexploded and abandoned ordnance (UXO and AXO) in the sites in order to safely re-establish secure ammunition storage facilities. In addition, high levels of contamination remain and pose fatal threats to local coastal communities via UXO, landmines and Cluster munitions. (Partner: MAG Libya/BAC and PSSM in Ammunition Storage)
